Breakfast with Minnie & Friends

Breakfast with Minnie & Friends is the only character dining option within Disneyland Park. It’s located at the Plaza Inn restaurant just off Main St. They are most famous for their Fried Chicken Dinner, which is fabulous, but the breakfast buffet is fantastic in its own right.

After checking in with your reservation, yes you should make one, they immediately take pictures of your group. The pictures will be printed and placed into a keepsake portfolio that you may purchase during your meal. You can decline having the picture taken if you want. After pictures you are taken to a cashier to pay and then it’s off to your table. Our host also gave us a little mini-tour of the buffet before taking us to our seats. I have a few food allergies, which I mentioned at check-in, and as soon as we sat down I was told that the chef would come out to talk to me. The chef came out right away to let me know what was safe to eat and what I needed to avoid in the buffet lines. She also offered to make me a special fruit plate, since one of my allergies is pineapple, to ensure that the fruit I ate hadn’t come into any contact with pineapple, as it’s all together in the buffet.

The breakfast is served via several different buffet stations. On the day we attended they had the following items to choose from: Mickey waffles, pancakes, French Toast, scrambled eggs, hash browns, chicken fried steak, biscuits & gravy, country potatoes, an omelet station, bacon, ham, sausage, oatmeal, cold cereals, fresh fruit, fruit toppings, jello, yogurt parfaits, and a variety of small pastries. They also have a self serve drink counter with soda, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, orange juice, apple juice, milk, chocolate milk, and water.

We tried a little of everything they had to offer and the food was all good. The bacon was a little too limp for my taste, and some of the pastries were dry, but other than that I have no complaints at all about the food. My two favorite items from the buffet were the Biscuits & Gravy and the Mickey Waffles. This time I chose to just have blueberries with my waffles, but the caramel banana sauce that they offer with them is phenomenal.

When dining out the food is extremely important, but with a character breakfast the experience is what you’re really paying for. There was no disappointment here in regards to the food or the character interactions. If you’re looking for the dining experience with the most variety of characters then this is the one for you. We were there for about an hour and a half, and in that time there were very few moments when there wasn’t a character at our table, or at least close in proximity. The characters there that morning were: Minnie (of course), Rafiki, Captain Hook, Tigger, Eeyore, Chip, Dale, Gideon, Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother, and a Mary Poppins Penguin. They all spent a lot of time at each table while we were there. Each character came through the dining room at least twice, sometimes more, and they were extremely playful with kids and adults alike. In fact, I need to go back to take more pictures of the food, as we were so overwhelmed by character interactions that I forgot to take pictures of all the edible items. Definitely not a bad thing.

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and recommend it as the best character breakfast at the Disneyland Resort, in terms of both food and variety of characters. Though a couple of the other buffets have a better variety of food, the extra characters here bump it up to best as far a character dining for me. If you’ve eaten at the Minnie & Friends breakfast, let us know your experience. Be sure to check the Disneyland website for current prices and to make your reservation.

Enjoy and Happy Eating!!

Breakfast with Minnie and Friends

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I haven’t eaten at the character breakfast at the Plaza Inn in Disneyland for many, many years. It’s now called Breakfast with Minnie and Friends, but I believe it was called something else way back when. If fact, here is a picture of me the last time I had breakfast here. As you can see it was during the Rescue Rangers days, so that was indeed many years ago.

After checking in with your reservation, they immediately take pictures of your group, that they will try to sell you later, then they take you to the cashier to pay and then it’s off to your table. Our hostess also gave us a little mini-tour of the buffet before taking us to our seats. I have a food allergy and as soon as we sat down she said she’d send the chef out to talk to me. The chef came out right away and then I was off to the food choices now knowing what was safe for me to eat. The breakfast is served buffet style and on the day we attended they had the following items to choose from: Mickey waffles, pancakes, scrambled eggs, hash browns, chicken fried steak, biscuits & gravy, country potatoes, an omelet station, bacon, sausage, oatmeal, cold cereals, fresh fruit, jello, yogurt parfaits, and a variety of small pastries. They all spent a lot of time at each table while we were there, and each came through at least twice, sometimes more, and they were extremely playful. With the announcement that Big Thunder Ranch will be closing in January 2016, I felt compelled to honor this wonderful and often overlooked area of Disneyland.

Any tribute to Big Thunder Ranch, needs to start with the BBQ. I’m not a big fan of ribs or beans, but I LoVe them here. This is a meal that will truly be missed by me and my family. The one thing I’ve never had there is dessert, since I’m always too full after all-you-can-eat BBQ. Will rectify that in Sept, as I’ve booked a reservation where we can have just dessert later in the evening.

Big Thunder Ranch is also the best place to enjoy each of the holiday seasons. It’s rarely crowded and has some of the best entertainment and character interactions you can find anywhere in the parks.

Since we’re in the 60th Anniversary Celebration year, let’s start with that. They really did it up for the official birthday and cupcake distribution.

Goofy’s Kitchen is a not to be missed dining destination for kids of all ages, even the adult ones. This fun restaurant located at the Disneyland Hotel offers a character buffet for either breakfast or dinner. Regardless of the meal time you choose there are five stations offering a variety of foods that should find something to please everyone in your party. Though the menu changes daily, for breakfast you can expect some variation of made-to-order omelets, Mickey Mouse waffles and pancakes, French toast, sausage, bacon, a variety of egg options, smoked salmon, pastries, fruit, and their signature peanut butter and jelly pizza. For dinner you will find the return of the peanut butter and jelly pizza, as well as some heartier foods including a couple of carving station meats, fresh fish of the day, a variety of fruits and vegetables, a salad bar which includes some tossed salads, as well as make your own options, hot dogs, soup, pasta, rolls & butter, several pizzas, mac & cheese, even on a pizza, chicken nuggets, mashed & scalloped potatoes, and a large variety of desserts including an ice cream bar, bread pudding, fruit cobbler, and several choices of small mousses, tarts, cupcakes, and cookies.

I have only eaten at Goofy’s kitchen twice and both times were for dinner, so I can’t speak personally to the quality and taste of the breakfast buffet. If  you’ve had the breakfast there, please let us know in the comments your thoughts about the food offered then. For the dinner buffet I took a little of everything, between the two visits, and I can say that most of the food is quite good. There were a couple of exceptions to that, however. Both times the beef at the carving station was so tough as to be completely inedible and the scalloped potatoes are extremely salty. Those are the only two problems I found with the food, though, and considering all of the options you have it’s easy to just skip those items and still have a very full and satisfying meal. I can highly recommend the mashed potatoes, fruit & salad bars, chicken nuggets, almost everything in the dessert station, and, of course, the peanut butter and jelly pizza.

Though the food is very good for the most part, it is really the secondary piece to this dining experience, as most people are really there for the entertainment and character interactions. After you check-in for your reservation, and yes you really need to make a reservation, you will be guided to the waiting area for your table to become available. You can either just sit and wait or partake of the opportunity to have your picture taken with Chef Goofy. We’ve always been seated either right on time for our reservation or early, so I must commend the check-in staff for their organization and efficiency. Not sure if that is the experience of everyone, but it has been mine each time. Once seated our server has come to the table almost immediately to take our drink orders and then it’s off to the buffet to make our food choices. Of course it’s all you can eat, so you can go back as many times as you like. I tend to do one station at a time, and make a visit to each of them separately.

After you re-take your seat you can expect the real fun to begin. The characters have a fun little dance party parade through the restaurant every half hour or so. You will be expected to participate my spinning your napkin in the air and if you’ve been there a lot feel free to sing along. I’ll try to add a video of the parade to this post later. Depending on when you arrive you may experience the parade first or personal visits from the characters. Each of the characters will make their way around the restaurant. There’s no need to get up and disrupt your meal when you see your favorite on the floor, as each will stop at your table for a visit. Often times more than once. Each time I’ve eaten there it has been the same group of characters consisting of Goofy, Minnie Mouse, Pluto, and Chip and Dale. I’m not sure if they ever change that up or if it is always those same characters. If you’ve eaten here, please leave a comment letting us know your experience with both the characters and the food offerings.

Be sure to check the Disneyland website for current prices and to make your reservation. Yes, I am again encouraging you to make a reservation, as this restaurant is always busy.

Enjoy and Happy Eating!!

The new Paint the Night parade at Disneyland is quite lovely,  no doubt about it. I have to say I’m not sure how I feel about the use of the Main Street Electrical Parade music starting it off, however. I get that it’s meant to be an homage, and for that I appreciate its inclusion. It was, and always will be, my favorite Disney parade, though, and that gives me mixed feelings about its inclusion in the new parade.

The new music for this parade is catchy, but still not as cool as its predecessor, and the floats are truly beautiful. They included a nice variety of fan favorite characters throughout, but it wasn’t satisfying for me as a parade starting off the 60th Anniversary Celebration. In honor of that I wish they had included some of the more historically important moments from Disney’s history. I would have liked to see individual floats for Mary Poppins and Snow White, as well as the inclusion of the entire Fab 5, and a float showing images of Uncle Walt would have been wonderful. That being said, it is a fun parade to watch and I’m sure most guests will enjoy it.

Have you all seen the new parade yet? What are your thoughts about it?

It will take multiple trips to experience it all and that’s not a bad thing. Here are some pictures from my first experience with the celebratory offerings.
